I’ve watched it happen hundreds of times.

A group steps off the boat at Phewa Lake, squints into the afternoon sun, and starts looking around. One person says, “I need something cold.” Another says, “I’m starving.” A third says, “Just somewhere to sit for a while.”

And suddenly everyone is walking in a slightly different direction.

I run Relax Kitchen in Hallanchowk, Lakeside — around a ten-minute walk from the main boating area, depending on where you start and how fast you walk. Over the years, I’ve noticed that guests who come in after boating have a very specific kind of appetite: part tiredness, part sun, part hunger, and part that relaxed feeling of having done something outdoors.

They don’t always know exactly what they want. They just know they want to stop somewhere good.

This guide is what I’d tell you if you walked through our door and asked:

“What should I eat right now?”

What You Actually Feel Like After Boating And Why It Matters

Most food guides just list restaurant names.

I want to talk about the feeling first, because it shapes what you should actually order.

After an hour or two on Phewa Lake, especially in the warmer months, your body is usually in one of three states.

You may be hot and slightly dehydrated. The sun reflecting off the water is stronger than it looks.

You may be genuinely hungry, especially if your boating plan ran through lunchtime.

Or you may be pleasantly tired — that loose, relaxed feeling where you want to sit and breathe, not rush into another decision.

Each state calls for something different.

I’ve seen guests order heavy rice and curry right after a hot morning on the lake and barely finish half. I’ve also seen people order “just a juice” and then realise twenty minutes later that they needed a proper meal.

That’s why reading your own mood before you order matters. It saves half-eaten plates, wasted money, and that feeling of choosing the wrong food just because it was the first thing you saw.

Many boating guests come in with the same look: hot, tired, hungry, and unsure what to order. Some want a cold drink first. Some need a full lunch. Some are with a group that can’t agree on one thing. This guide is written for that exact moment.

Start With Something Cold

If you feel hot or tired when you walk in, my honest advice is simple:

Don’t order food first.

Get something cold. A fresh juice, a smoothie, cold coffee, or one of our non-alcoholic mocktails. Sit for ten minutes. Let your body settle. Then think about food.

At Relax Kitchen, we make our mocktails in-house with ingredients like lemon, ginger, mint and seasonal fruit. On a warm Pokhara afternoon, a cold drink can do more for you in the first five minutes than any food can.

Some guests order one drink and find that’s genuinely enough for now. Others use it as the opening act before a proper meal.

Either way, starting cold is almost always the right call after time on the water.

Light Food: When a Full Meal Isn’t What You Need

Not every post-boating visit needs to become a big lunch.

Sometimes easy is better.

Momo is one of our most-ordered light options, and I think it deserves that reputation. It’s warm, shareable, and doesn’t sit too heavily. A plate of steamed momo with achar or soup on the side can be quiet and satisfying — ideal if you plan to keep walking around Lakeside or if you want to save your appetite for dinner later.

Soup, a sandwich, fries or a small salad can work the same way.

I especially recommend going light if you’re travelling with children. Children usually need something fast and familiar before their patience runs out — and momo tends to win often.

Mood after boatingWhat tends to work
Hot and low energyCold drink first, then decide on food
Not very hungryMomo, soup, or something small to share
Still want to exploreA light meal instead of heavy lunch
Travelling with childrenQuick, easy food they’ll actually finish

If you’re still unsure, start small. You can always order more later.

A Proper Meal: When Boating Ran Into Lunchtime

If you finished boating around noon or early afternoon, you probably need a real meal.

And that’s fine. That’s what lunch is for.

My recommendation is Nepali khana: rice, dal, seasonal vegetables, achar and sides. It’s filling without being complicated, and it gives you energy for the rest of the afternoon without weighing you down too much.

I grew up eating it, and I still think it’s one of the best-value meals in Lakeside for what you get. If you haven’t had a proper Nepali set meal yet during your trip, after boating is a good time to try it.

At the time of writing, our Nepali Khana Set starts from Rs. 450. Other menu items vary depending on the dish, portion and availability. Lighter items such as momo, snacks and drinks usually suit budget travellers looking for something simple, while full meals, seafood specials and group orders naturally cost more.

If you’re travelling on a budget or ordering for a group, check the current menu first or message us before visiting. It’s better to know the price and availability before everyone gets hungry.

If you want something more international, pizza works well, especially for groups. A pizza in the middle of the table takes pressure off everyone to make a perfect decision.

Indian food is similar. Curries, naan and rice stretch naturally across a shared table.

Seafood Specials: When You Want Something Different

If you want something a little different from the usual Lakeside options, we offer seafood specials.

I introduced seafood to our menu because I kept noticing a gap. Many guests around Lakeside wanted something beyond the usual momo, pizza, burger or Dal Bhat — especially after spending time near Phewa Lake.

Seafood felt like a natural fit for that mood: relaxed, slightly special, and better suited to a proper lunch or dinner than a quick snack.

Depending on availability, our seafood specials may include fish or seafood-style plates prepared as a full meal rather than just a side dish. Some guests order them because they want something different after boating; others choose them for group dining when one person wants local food, another wants pizza, and someone else wants a more special plate.

Availability depends on what’s fresh and what’s available that day, so I always recommend checking the menu or sending us a quick WhatsApp message before you come in.

Eating With a Group That Can’t Agree

This is probably the most common situation I deal with.

Families, friend groups and tour groups come in after boating, and everyone wants something slightly different.

One person wants local food. One wants pizza. Someone is vegetarian. Someone barely ate breakfast and needs something big. And the person who organised the boat trip is just trying to keep everyone moving.

The practical solution is a restaurant with a wide enough menu that nobody has to compromise too much.

That’s part of why I built our menu the way I did — not to be everything, but to have enough range that six people with different preferences can sit at one table and all eat well.

Momo and pizza are easy to share down the middle. Indian curries stretch across the table. Someone can order a fresh juice while another gets a full rice meal.

It doesn’t need to become an argument.

What someone in your group wantsWhat to point them toward
Something localNepali khana or momo
Something cold and refreshingFresh juice, smoothie, or non-alcoholic mocktail
Something familiarPizza, burger, or fries
Something fillingRice dishes, Indian food, or noodles
Something differentSeafood specials
Something to shareMomo, pizza, or a curry spread

A good group meal after boating isn’t about everyone ordering the same thing. It’s about giving everyone enough choice without making the decision stressful.
